What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of healing which forms part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for over 2,500 years, which originated in China and other far Eastern cultures.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, good health is dependent on Qi or vital energy moving easily through the body along lines called meridians. An indication that Qi is out of balance or blocked is shown by symptoms of pain, illness, and other physical or emotional signs. Factors which disturb the flow of Qi leading to ill health include stress, grief, tension, poor diet, anger, anxiety, medications, infections, shock, addictions and hereditary factors.
Acupuncture is a holistic therapy that focuses on the whole person, aiming to stimulate the body’s own ability to heal and therefore restoring balance physically, mentally and emotionally.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles (which are unlike needles used for vaccinations) at various acupuncture points located on the body in order to clear blockages of Qi or vital energy which may be causing physical or emotional symptoms. It is a gentle and effective treatment which is widely used and accepted all over the world. People also often use acupuncture as a preventative measure in order to keep in the best possible health.
Non-needle treatments are also available and include acupressure massage, cupping, gua sha and moxibustion.
