What will happen on my first visit

A full medical case history will be taken at your initial consultation, including details of past health issues and current condition. Then the tongue will be observed, and pulses will be felt on each wrist. In Classical Chinese Medicine, the tongue and pulse indications form an important part of the diagnostic interpretation of an individuals’ health.

A diagnosis will then be made and an appropriate treatment plan tailored specifically for the individual will be formulated and appropriate acupuncture points selected. Lifestyle and dietary advice may also be given at this stage.

It is important to note that Classical Acupuncture treats both the underlying cause and also the symptoms that the individual presents with. In this way, health and balance may be restored with the aim to prevent reoccurrence of the problem.

Does Acupuncture treatment hurt?

Very fine needles are inserted just under the skin and the most common sensations are a dull ache and tingling rather than pain. Any minor discomfort is usually brief, and most people find acupuncture relaxing and experience a feeling of calm both during and after the treatment.

All needles are single use, pre-sterilised and immediately disposed of after use. The highest standard of cleanliness is always maintained.

As well as the use of needles, other techniques such as cupping, moxibustion, guasha and massage may be used if deemed appropriate.

How often should I have treatment?

Generally, people start by having weekly treatments, however this may vary between patients. A course of treatment is required with some changes in your condition if it is chronic, generally being noted after 4-6 treatments. Acute conditions may respond more quickly with 1-4 treatments. As your condition improves, the treatments will then be reduced to fortnightly, three weekly or monthly. Many people return for ‘maintenance sessions’ to preserve their health and wellbeing.
